Let's dispel the myth of long coffee

Sfatiamo il mito del caffè lungo

☕ Long or short coffee: which contains more caffeine?

How many times do you hear people say at the bar:

“A coffee, please… but make it a long one , I’ve already had too many today!”

The belief is common: a long coffee would be lighter , less strong, more diluted.
But is it really like that?

🔴 Absolutely not.
And now we'll explain why.

🧠 Perception vs. Reality

When we enjoy an espresso, the sense we involve most is taste .
And many misunderstandings are based precisely on this taste perception.

👅 A ristretto coffee has a stronger, more concentrated, dense flavor, so we perceive it as “more full-bodied”.
On the contrary, a long coffee has a more diluted and soft taste, therefore it is considered “lighter”.

But if we look at the technical-chemical process, the opposite happens.

💧 The Extraction: What Really Happens

Making an espresso means passing boiling water under pressure through a dose of ground coffee, enclosed in the filter.

👉 When water passes through dust:

  • dissolves water-soluble compounds (including caffeine)

  • drags oils, sugars, acids, alkaloids

  • releases suspended microparticles

⏱️ And the longer the water stays in contact with the dust, the more substances it can extract .

➡️ Therefore, the longer the coffee is steeped, the greater the amount of caffeine and stimulants contained in the cup.
The flavor may seem “lighter,” but the chemical composition is richer .

⚖️ Ristretto = less volume, less extraction

A ristretto has a shorter extraction: less water passes through the coffee in a shorter time.
The result:

  • it's creamier and more concentrated

  • it has a more intense flavor

  • contains less caffeine than a long espresso

❗ But be careful: ristretto does not mean “weak”, on the contrary.
The perception is stronger, but the content of stimulants is lower than in a long coffee.

✅ Conclusion

🔍 If your goal is to limit your caffeine intake without sacrificing taste, the best choice is:

a nice strong coffee , prepared according to the rules of the art.

Remember:

  • Long coffee = more extraction = more caffeine

  • Short coffee = less extraction = less caffeine
